North Quay Watermain Upgrade

Under ‘North Quay Drogheda AC Mains Upgrade 2015’, Irish Water prioritised the replacement of a section of problematic watermain along the North Quays in Drogheda Co. Louth. It was proposed to expedite the replacement of approximately 300m of 150mm Asbestos Cement watermain, constructed under reinforced concrete and bituminous macadam road surfaces on the North Quay and The Mall in Drogheda.

Scope of works:

  • Construction of approximately 300 linear metres of a 250mm Outside Diameter (OD) Polyethylene Barrier Pipe Distribution Watermain, suitable for contact with potable water.
  • Construction of approximately 120 linear metres of 110mm Outside Diameter (OD) Polyethylene Barrier Pipe suitable for contact with potable water.
  • Installation of 2 No. critical supply connections to existing live watermains:
  • Connecting new 250mm PE watermain to existing live 250mm Cast Iron watermain at the junction of Shop Street and North Quay. This is an extremely busy junction which is highly congested throughout normal working hours. All works associated with this connection point had to be completed at off-peak times.
  • Connecting new 250mm PE watermain to existing live 250mm Cast Iron watermain at the junction of the North Quay and Constitution Hill, in Drogheda. This again is an extremely busy junction therefore all associated works had to be completed in off-peak working times.
  • Installation of property connections to existing properties along the proposed pipeline corridors. The existing service connections to domestic and commercial properties were lead or copper connections and had to be replaced up to the boundary of each property, with new polyethylene pipe service connection. Properties along the North Quay, from Shop Street junction to Mayoralty Street Junction (public property) had to be serviced directly off the pressure reduced 110mm Polyethylene watermain. Properties along the Port owned land had to be serviced off the 250mm OD watermain, with individual Pressure reducing valves fitted on each individual connection.
  • Installation and Commissioning of 2 No. Pressure Reducing Valves, one to reduce pressure on the 250mm OD watermain prior to connection to the 250mm Cast Iron Main at Constitution Hill and the second to reduce pressure between the proposed 250mm OD watermain and the 110mm watermain at Mayoralty street.
  • Installation of 1 no. 110mm OD PE watermain connection at Constitution Hill Junction to an existing 100mm Cast Iron watermain.
  • Installation of required Scour Valves, Air Valves, Sluice Valves, Hydrants and all associated chamber works.
  • Testing and Commissioning of all sections and elements of the pipework and fittings to required standards.
  • Permanent Reinstatement of all sections of the works in compliance with relevant Local Authorities and Land Owners.
  • Ensuring consultation and notifications to all affected property/ business owners throughout the duration of the project.
