MEIC and our sister company, Glan Agua, along with Irish Water and Mayo County Council marked the official opening of the Killala, Foxford and Charlestown Wastewater Treatment Plants on Thursday, June 22nd 2021  The €19m investment has ended the discharge of raw sewage to the Co. Mayo areas.

The new and upgraded plants, which includes the construction of a new wastewater treatment plant in Killala, will bring huge benefits to the local communities in terms of protection of the environment, water sports and marine life.

What Was Involved

Killala WwTP

• Construction of a new main pump station for delivery of full flow to treatment to the new waste water treatment plant
• Provision of storm storage and screening
• Construction of a new water treatment plant with population equivalent (PE) of 1800 with provision of future upgrade to 2300 PE.
• Construction of onsite sludge storage, thickening and handling facilities
• Upgrades and improvement to the network pump station
• New rising mains linking the new forward feed pump station to the waste water treatment plant.
• Sewer network pipeline upgrade, replacement and rehabilitation of pipelines including associated connections.

Foxford WwTP

• New waste water treatment plant with population equivalent (PE) of 3500 with provision of future upgrade to 4500 PE.
• Construction of onsite sludge storage, thickening and handling facilities
• Construction of new main forward feed pump station at old wastewater treatment plant site.
• Provision of storm water screening and on-site storage
• Construction of a new pump station and upgrades to 3 other pump stations on the network
• Upgrade, replacement and rehabilitation of sewer network pipework.
• New rising mains linking the new forward feed pumpstation to the waste water treatment plant and outfall pipeline from the plant to the River Moy.

Charlestown WwTP

• Upgrade of the existing Wastewater Treatment Plant from 1420 population equivalent (PE) to 3400 PE
• Construction of onsite sludge storage, thickening and handling facilities
• New onsite pumping station for influent and storm flow management
• Provision of onsite storm screening and storage.
• Upgrade, replacement and rehabilitation of sewer network pipework.
